Rudimentary Peni-The EPs of RP

Another band that's hard to write about since I love them so much. Looking at the cover and giving it just a surface listening you might just think "ah, more punk." Don't do that. For example, listen to Gardener and hear the Joy Division influenced goth punk. Nick Blinko's psychoses really come across in odd ways like in tracks like Teenage Time Killer, that has weirdo psych squiggly guitars. They're just too different from all the cliched punk, which is probably why they never really seem to fit in anywhere. Everything this band does is utterly essential. They've been around for about 30 years and they're still more relevant than nearly everything that's out there. Quite a feat.

  1. Totally agree with all that. I can't think of another band whose releases I've anticipated so eagerly over such a long period of time, from when I bought these singles back when they were released right up to the most recent records. The first ep with the cover shown here in particular was one of the most exciting records I'd ever heard. It still sounds as good today. And consistently amazing artwork over the years too. It just doesn't age. Sadly I never got to see them play live. I was too young to be allowed to go jaunting off round the country to such events and they never came anywhere near home. Their gigs were few and far between at the best of times and non-existant since goodness knows when. They never really fitted in with the in crowd back then. Outsiders to the outsiders even, but with a body of work that outstrips nearly all their contemporaries.
