Harry Bertoia-Unfolding

If you're in the South West Pennsylvania, I recommend a visit to Frank Lloyd Wright's Kentuck Knob house. Less celebrated than its nearby brother, Falling Water, Kentuck Knob is really the underrated gem. Not only is the house remarkable, but the sculpture park on the grounds has a great collection. One of the highlights of my trip was being able to play one of these Bertoia sculptures. Situated on the edge of a cliff overlooking a large valley, these droney notes sounded like a metallic beehive in a frenzy. The long decay of the buzz over the valley was both haunting and oddly warming on that cold fall day. This disc is a few extended pieces played on more Bertoia sculptures taken from several releases he issued under the name Sonambient. At times menacing, at times soothing, always interesting. There's a reason why this dude is in a million important museums and art institutes.

  1. HEllo,
Thank you for your entry about Bertoia. I have been studying his work since 1998, locating it, photographing & documenting it to prepare a Catalogue Raisonne. And I've been at Kentuck Knob several times. You might be interested to see my website: www.hbrp.net
Also, I'd love to talk to you about this.
