Rolling Stones-We Love You 7" (plus bonuses)

People not in the know tend to shit on the Stones doom psych masterpiece "Their Satanic Majesty's Request," claiming it was simply a bad Beatles imitation. However, these people forget that the Stones outdid the Beatles with that release. They brought a dark creepiness that the Beatles could never attain. This single (from '67) shows just how wigged out they could get. Some of this sounds like it could be recorded tomorrow. It's that relevant.

  1. This single and that album are the only things I've heard by the Rolling Stones that I actually like, and like a lot. I'd go so far as to say I actively dislike everything else I've heard by them. I agree too that the Beatles can't compete with this. Never much liked them either though. Is that heresy? Or irrational prejudice? I guess I'll have to download this to find out what the bonuses are.

  2. Hmm...I'll admit that the Stones are probably my favorite band of all time. But that really depends what day it is. But I can understand why people might hate them. And definitely I could live the rest of my life without hearing one of their overplayed radio hits. But there's just too many good deep cuts for me to discount them. The Beatles on the other hand...

  3. Nice instrumental but the title track sounds as though it has had its raw harsh edge ironed out, unless that is just my chronically scratched copy. I guess I heard too many punk bands say how shit the Stones were and some of it sank in. Quite a lot of it actually and there's no getting it out ha ha. Can we diss Elvis too or is that sacred territory lol..

  4. Fuck Elvis. Barring In the Ghetto (for hilarity's sake) that guy didn't do shit. Possibly more over rated than the Beatles.

  5. Possibly, but he had some killer kung fu moves. This is a great single isn't it? I particularly like the slamming prison doors. I'm sure the clanking keys were higher up in the original mix which is where they should have stayed as they are an essential part of the history of the song. Sorry, just being a bit fussy.

  6. No I think you're right. The song is super fucked, but the mix still leaves more to be desired, Still, I do think this is a prime example of how a single should function. Killer A & B sides, weird tracks that don't fit on an album. It is a winner. Too bad people know them for lesser works.

  7. And Elvis's dabblings in martial arts always struck me as dilliantism in the most refined sense. I could probably punch out that dumb hick, but he did have some serious style. I'll at least grant him that. Too bad his music sucked.
