Andy Zwerling-Spiders in the Night

This looks like a million other records that came out during this era. Just a pretty average looking dude relaxing on his roof. And I’m sure plenty of people assumed that it would be like all the other records it resembles. But if they happened to flip over the sleeve and read a few of the song titles like “Knife Man” (followed by “Slicing”), “Turtles vs. the Green Ants,” and the eponymous track would hint at the weirdness and charm of this album. It does have that folky, singer-songwriter vibe, but that’s matched with that cellar dwelling, creepo psychosis too. A nice a relaxing piece of dementia. And just what is he doing up on that roof?

Bobby Brown-The Enlightening Beam of Axonda

And this definitely ain't the Bobby Brown that you're thinking of. Notice the lack of any sweet fade or blood shot coke eyes. This Bobby's prerogative is to bring you some meditative, home spun psych done up in a one man band style (with homemade instruments to boot). I've also got the live record he did (I believe recorded in the parking lot of a Fleetwood Mac concert or something) but it's pretty crackly and I'm not smart enough to figure out how to clean it up. But if someone is dying for I guess I could post that as well since I know it's not the easiest thing to find.

Hasil Adkins-Chicken Walk

Oh, to be back in West Virginia. And since that's the case, what better way to champion my return than to post some of the wildest nonsense to come out of this fine state (sorry snake handlers, you can't beat Hasil). The Haze was blasting out cheap homemade guitar rock cut to cardboard in his chicken shack way back when. If you think oldies lack a gritty edge, then give this a listen and expand your ear. And there was no need for a band, Adkins did it all by his lonesome. Why don't you try writing 7,000 songs? Hasil did.

Dandelions

Here's a really treat. The stars must have been aligned sometime in 1971, when two tweens (11 & 10) got together to cut this fantastic slice of innocence. I've read about some Shaggs comparisons, and that's not too far off. But christ, these kids wrote better songs than I ever could. Their ineptitude only makes it that more charming. Normally, I think kids suck pretty hard, but for some reason there's a really understated beauty and yearning here that makes me think that there might be a few kids that don't need to be dashed against some rocks. More kids need to follow and leave that kids bop shit alone. It's just creepy.

Furze-UTD

I guess coming up with a child's name can be pretty difficult for expecting parents. You don't want to project to much, yet you want to ensure a sense of individuality within the child. There's also social conventions and expectations to consider. And anyone who's ever driven through Indiana is, I'm sure, aware of how horrendous a name can truly be once they are confronted by the massive Tom Raper billboards. What a strange coincide that Woe J. Reaper's (sole member of Furze) parents happened to hit on such a perfect name. I guess sometimes a name can truly determine one's path in life. Okay, now Tristram Shandy is starting to make sense.
