The Five Day a Week Straw People

If you're familiar with the Attack, then you certainly know that John Du Cann (sometimes apearing sans Du) is a serious guitar monster. Or maybe you've heard Andromeda or Atomic Rooster or the supremely underrated Hard Stuff. Well, that's him too. Rumor has it that this album was recorded in four measly hours. I wasn't there so I'm not going to claim otherwise. If it be true, there must have been some serious magic involved since this is a real Brit psych classic. It's a really cohesive album, but yet it sounds diverse. I mean, there's even some downer psych rock that isn't folky in the slightest. But don't worry, this isn't going to bum you out or anything.

  1. Thanks very much for this. I've not heard it before. I'll certainly be searching out a copy. It didn't grab me at first but it really took off around Strange House. Great stuff.

  2. It's a grower. It comes in the guise of the familiar, with all the typical psych trappings, but later exposes itself for a pretty odd and unstable record. It took me several listens to really get into it, but once it happened I was committed to it.

  3. I read some more about this and the last nine tracks are actually the Attack. Both bands produce some really good songs here. And I am always a sucker for typical psych trappings.

  4. Definitely possible. I this is the edition with a bunch of bonus cuts, so they very well may be from the Attack sessions. But I wasn't aware of that, so thanks.

  5. Life After Decca I saw these sessions called, from when Decca couldn't handle the strange new direction the Attack were taking and refused to release their new material. Decca are a bit rubbish aren't they.

  6. Also, some of these Attack tracks reappear rerecorded on the Andromeda 7" and LP. I prefer these versions though.

  7. Dunno. I think Decca had some solid discs, but I don't know to much about them as a company. they were the first to use Dolby as I just learned by today's crossword puzzle.
