feedtime

Might as well tarry down South but shift over to Australia for the moment. Along the way we can pick up this trio of hooligans who definitely bring the mother fucking ruckus. I guess it would be easy to say that they've got a style that seems like a more hard hitting, punked out Birthday Party, but that might be simply do to geographic relativism. I'd say that claim has merit, but feedtime are no mere copyists so when people make this comparison I normally don't get it. I'm not sure why I love Australian noise rock so much. I've never been there. And though I'd like a visit, I doubt it will occur anytime soon. But my buddy was recently there and was amazed by the amount of prostitutes and bathrooms where you pissed against a wall rather than having urinal. Not sure what that's saying.

Tamam Shud-Evolution OST

It's about time that this oppressive heat has lifted and I can finally venture out of my hovel. I'm sure this is only a brief reprieve, but in this passing moment I'm going to go outside and enjoy this surf rock classic. I say surf rock, because I believe that this was originally the soundtrack from some Australian surfing film. But this isn't songs about cars, girls, and waves. This is a much more fuzzy, garagey, psych out. I don't know why, but this seems like a fitting entry to cap off a bizarre month.

Trevor Mcnamara-Hey Captain

Another warm weather treat that'll please you much in a way that an original (not these new ones, mind you) jell-o pudding pop would. Or maybe it's more like a choco-taco. Not sure about that. But I do know that this is one of my preferred Antipodean psych discs. And that under appreciated scene had some good uns too. McNamara plays all the instruments on this neglected slice of acid folk/fuzz psych goodness. I mean, he's no Todd Rundgren or anything, but still, I always like to hear about a dude who plays it all. And do it right. I'm looking at you depressive black metalers.

Belle du Soir

Here's the lone 7" (I think) from these unusual Antipodeans. Sometimes there's a Beat Happening-like dumb drums that I can't get enough of. There's also a jingle jangle surfish type guitar. And while I enjoy pretty much every aspect of this disc, it's the hushed girl vocals that just slay me. Most songs feel like they're threatening to fall apart at any moment and just inwardly collapse. An atypical sound for 1981 that continues to reward. Fill your empty head with these sounds now.
